Stone Care

What do I clean my Granite with?

Granite should be cleaned with soap and water. Also any cleaners that are approved for granite is safe for use. Cleaners like Glass Plus and Windex will not harm your granite. However, these types of products will reduce the life of the sealer.

What happens if I spill something?

The sealer is designed to protect the granite from incidental spills. Spills should be cleaned up with a mild dish soap and water as soon as possible. Spills such as oil, grease, coffee, and wine should be cleaned up before they are allowed to dry and penetrate the sealer. Routine cleaning after meals should be done to prevent stains from occurring.

How do I know if my granite needs to be sealed?

Sealing a granite countertop is similar to waxing a car. A simple test to see if your granite needs to be sealed is to put a little bit of water on the countertop. If the water beads up like it would on a waxed car, then your sealer is still working well. Sealers typically last from 3 months to a year, depending on the porosity of the stone and the daily cleaners. We sell recommended sealers and cleaners in our showroom.

What can scratch my granite?

Items like unglazed stoneware porcelain, pottery, serrated and ceramic knives, diamonds, nail files, and sand can scratch your granite. Be careful to not place and slide items that have been set on the ground outside on your granite countertop. Items such as grocery bags and bottles can pickup sand when set on the ground.

Can I cut and place hot pots things on my granite?

Yes, but it will destroy your knives and leave metal marks on the granite. High quality serrated knives may also nick or chip some stones. Therefore, cutting is not recommended. Just like glass, if there is a drastic temperature change, there is a chance of it cracking or crystallizing. Higher cooking temperatures and heavier cooking vessels can increase the risk of damage. Therefore, we recommend you to treat your investment as you would a fine piece of furniture and use hot plates or tivets
